Yikes~ Time flies!

I have seven months left until I am twenty-seven years old...I better start knocking a few more of these out :-] Seven months until I am twenty-seven...twenty-seven!?!?! How can a number sound so "established" (aka old). Twenty-seven.

In other news...How great is this advertisement in JCPenney? A little too flashy for my taste but I sure do get a kick out of the pairing.

Happy weekend!

reconciliation

Two years of silence. Five hours of honesty followed by forgiveness. I am thankful for reconciliation along with the closure and newness it brings.

My CoWorkers Rock My Face Off

Not only do we have fun working together, we have fun playing together. I thoroughly enjoy the camaraderie between my zoo camp counselor friends. They are truly incredible individuals! We recently saw a sneak peek of Zoo Keeper and floated down the Chattahoochee together. I cannot wait until our next outing!

Crafty Cereal-bowl Carapaces

Has the suspense been killing yah? We made cereal-bowl turtles this week at camp! The inspiration of making colorful carapaces came from reading Jabuti the Tortoise by Gerald McDermott. Here's (just one way) how you can make a recycled turtle!!

After some short prep of hot gluing popsicle sticks for flippers/legs and gluing construction paper (or pompoms) for heads...

just "paint on" various colors of tissue paper with a equal parts glue/water mixture.

Let dry and...

Viola! You have made super cute and eco-friendly turtles :-]

My (not so new, I guess) love~

Went to the High Museum of Art this morning (for free~ thanks, Bank of America!) to see their new exhibits. I was delighted to discover that Mister John Marin also enjoyed elephants. This particular quotation of his made my day: "I love to watch the way the elephant walks, the way it puts its foot down. It puts its foot down with respect for the Earth."

I love to watch Kelly and Tara at Zoo Atlanta~ especially when they are boogying!

While "summer sorting", My mom stumbled across these pictures of me as a four year old. The love with elephants started early :-]

Chances are this will someday soon be a reality...

Around the Web

A delicious wedding story.

An out of this world way to eat pizza.

Dear Santa, I would like one of these!

I heart them.

What to take to the July Fourth potluck? Check.

Potential wedding cake topper?

Summer craft project (except with Scrabble CheezIts wrappers).

No laughing matter, I Love Liberty! Happy Fourth of July everyone :-]

Yay turtles!!!

Zoo Atlanta and the Georgia Sea Turtle Center are teaming up to help Diamondback Terrapins. Collaboration is a beautiful thing :-] I am proud to be affiliated with both of these institutions as they strive to save turtles.

Hmmm...

What can one do with one hundred seventy-seven self serve cereal bowls? Stay tuned :-]

Pachyderm Pedicure & Panda Playtime

Tara was busy getting a pedicure today. Watching took me back to my Georgia Sea Turtle Center days when the sea turtle patients would get a "shell-icure" (scrapping loose pieces of keratin off of their carapace and plastron) during their treatments. Did you know that elephants have five toes on their front feet and four toes on their rear feet? And no, we do not paint their nails (as one darling camper wondered today :-] )

For the first time in three weeks, I finally saw this little guy in action-- and boy was he funny! Here is my proposed panda dialogue~

Po: "Hiyah...surprise roundhouse kick to the face success...Let's play, Mom!"
Lun Lun: "Oh my little Kung Fu Panda, you have a body slam coming your way!"
Lun Lun: "Haha! Bow to your Sansei, Little One!"
Po: "Ah! Not the tummy tickle monster!"
(tickle wars immense)
Lun Lun:"Whew, Momma Kung Fu Panda is getting tired..."
Po: "Hey Mom, check out my awesome Kung Fu balance pose!"
Lun Lun: "Uh-hun" (heavy snoring continues)
Po: "I win! I win! Now for a snack..."

This job is so much fun :-]

Elephant Encounter...Video!!

Hey guys! Here is video of me meeting Kelly~ Enjoy!

Do you have a tattoo?

I love this idea for a tattoo. Ooh especially for a sea turtle tattoo~ hmmm...

P.S. My campers and I watched Kelly and Tara have blood drawn from their ears during a routine exam. Awesome! Did you know that elephants love to eat watermelon? Yum Yum!

Elephant Encounter

When I am not loving on turtles I am looooving on some elephants!! A childhood dream of mine came true today~ I touched and fed an African Elephant. Kelly is quite a beauty! Originally from Namibia, she came to Zoo Atlanta in 1986 when she was three years old. I cannot wait to introduce Kelly and Tara (an other African Elephant at Zoo Atlanta) to my campers next week! Oh yeah, We are the Exciting Elephants...how perfect!!

Turtles Everywhere!

I purchased this cleverly crafty bottlecap tortoise at Zoo Atlanta. Next time, I will use my employee discount to get him a buddy. Yep, that is correct- I am now working at Zoo Atlanta as a summer camp instructor...totally thrilled!!

Meet my new friends at Zoo Atlanta. The Leopard Tortoise (left) is aptly named! He was a fast little guy!! Doesn't that salad look scrumptious?! This Burmese Star Tortoise (right) thinks so!

Look what swam my way from TikiToes in Lawai, Hawaii~ Cannot wait to put them on Leandro!!

Yay for honey and sea turtles! Did you know that the Georgia Sea Turtle Center uses honey and honeycomb on their turtle patients? The honeycomb is bendable and waterproof (which is a huge help as the sea turtles are in water!) fitting nicely in their wounds. The honey also produces hydrogen peroxide in the wounds. Isn't nature cool?! Honeybees, like sea turtles, are an endangered species.

My uterus skipped a beat when I saw these baby overalls with a turtle on them!!! Ah! Two of my most favorite things. No, I did not purchase them...at least not yet! I am going to wait until they are on sale :-]

Happy Arbor Day!!

Thank you Jesus for trees! I think they are just wonderful. A childhood consisting of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree and countless viewings of Swiss Family Robinson aided in this love. Climbing, sitting, hammocking, building, resting, dreaming, eating yummy fruits, hanging twinkly lights, swinging, breathing and plenty more are possible because of these beautiful and mighty creations. Our dear Savior even paid our ransom upon a tree. Here are some of my most favorite trees from all over my little part of the world:

Cherry Blossom Trees in Conyers, GA

Athens, GA

Palm Trees in Orlando, FL

Grandfather Tree on Jekyll Island, GA

Tomorrowland Tree in the Magic Kingdom of Walt Disney World

Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island, GA

Atlantic Station Christmas Tree in Atlanta, GA

Baldwin, GA

Harris Neck Pine Tree in MacIntosh County, GA

Maple Tree outside my former college apartment window in Athens, GA

Advice from a Tree
By Ilan Shamir

Dear Friend,

Stand Tall and Proud
Sink your roots deeply into the Earth
Reflect the light of a greater source
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The Energy and Birth of Spring
The Growth and Contentment of Fall
The Rest and Quiet Renewal of Winter

Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of stars at night.
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light

Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots

Empty Tomb Easter Cookies

  • I made these cookies with my Vacation Bible School Kindergarteners two years ago and they still talk about them! Try making them with your family. They serve as a creative visual and delicious treat whilst learning and celebrating our
  • Risen Lord!!

  • Ingredients:
  • 1 cup whole pecans, in a plastic baggie
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 3 egg whites
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup sugar

  • Directions:
  • 1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees--you MUST do it now. Also, gather a cooking mallet, kitchen mixer, masking tape and Bible.
  • 2. Read John 19:1-3 ~ Jesus was beaten for our sins; beat the nuts with a cooking mallet; set aside.
  • 3. Read John 19:28-30 - Jesus drank something like vinegar (gall), sniff the fragrance, dip finger in and taste, too; place the vinegar in a mixing bowl.
  • 4. Read John 10:10-11 - Egg whites symbolize Jesus' holy, innocent life; add whites to the bowl with the vinegar.
  • 5. Read Luke 23:27 - the bitter tears of the women; taste a few grains, remember your own sins; add the salt to the bowl.
  • 6. Read Psalm 34:8 and John 3:16 - Sweet salvation! Taste and see; add to the bowl.
  • 7. Crank up the mixer and let it go while you read from Isaiah 1:18 and John 3:1-3; let the mixer go for about 12-15 MINUTES; this needs to be VERY stiff!
  • 8. Read Matthew 27:57-60 - Fold the nuts into the egg-sugar mixture; this symbolizes the rocks in the garden.
  • 9. Using a scoop or knife & spoon, drop by spoon into mounds (to resemble a rocky tomb); put into the oven and turn it OFF!
  • 10. Read Matthew 27:65-66 - The tomb is sealed; use two pieces of tape (5-6 inches long) to "seal" the door edges (symbolically).
  • 11. Read John 16:20 & 22 - Consider these passages, then go to bed!
  • 12. NEXT MORNING: Read Matthew 28:1-9 - Jesus is risen! Behold--the empty tomb! Unseal the oven door, take out the cookies, break or bite one in half -- it should be hollow inside---empty---just like the Tomb!
  • 13. He is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

  • Recipe taken from here.

364 days out of the year I love shadows. I attribute this love to the little kid in me who is obsessed with Peter Pan as well as cool photo shoot options. However, on the glorious second day of February their presence (especially if a certain critter is out and about) is not desired. According to groundhogs nationwide, there are only six short weeks until SPRING! My most favorite season :-] I love watching the plants burst forth in their glorious array of color. Today while shopping I couldn't help skipping like a little girl through the gardening section. What is your favorite season?

Daniel blessed the God of heaven, saying, "Blessed be the name of God, forever and ever. He knows all, does all: He changes the seasons and guides history, He raises up kings and also brings them down, He provides both intelligence and discernment, He opens up the depths, tells secrets, sees in the dark-light spills out of Him! God of all my ancestors, all thanks! all praise! You made me wise and strong."
    Daniel 2:19-23

*The honor of giving back to a ministry that has immeasurably poured into me faithfully for the last thirteen years

    Two weeks until twenty-six years~
Here is to trusting for many more renewals, reconciliations, and reunions.

"Leave It to a Funeral" written by Art Rainer

Someone I knew recently passed away. Who knew one day, and one funeral would make me think of so much. Here are my thoughts:

Leave it to a funeral to make me remember that death will happen to me, to you. It is coming. It cannot be stopped. Though we try through better health, medicine and surgeries, we only prolong the inevitable. One day, our hearts will stop, our blood will cease flowing and our life on this earth will be complete. I will be that person in a box.

Leave it to a funeral to remind me to love those near me, those far away from me. I look at my wife and see that each moment is precious; each is a gift from God. I remember to tell her that I love her and that I am glad she is on this journey with me. I remember those friends with whom I have lost contact and wonder where they are now and what I might have lost by not caring enough to give them a call.

Leave it to a funeral to show me the brevity of life, the uncertainty of life. Who on this earth knows what tomorrow may bring? Who knows our timeline? God holds our lives in His hands, and it is Him and only Him who sees our beginning and our end on this earth.

Leave it to a funeral to realize how petty I am, how I place so much focus on the minor aspects of life instead of the grand picture. It is amazing how I let the little things affect my life. I can let one abrasive confrontation determine my mindset, my mood for at least a portion of the day, maybe even the entire day. So much of my mental and physical time is lost, wasted on these moments with little retribution for my time spent. What would happen if I tried to view life as a whole, as something bigger and let the little things go?

Leave it to a funeral to reveal to me how important my mark on this planet can be, or cannot be. Our imprint will be left whether we want it to or not. It may be short; it may be lasting. It may be great; it may be small. It may be pleasant; it may be loathsome. Whatever it may be, it will exist; it will be your legacy.

Leave it to a funeral to make me want to apologize to those who I have hurt, to forgive those who have hurt me. Jesus says to forgive without end. Throughout life we make mistakes and mistakes are made against us. We have a brief opportunity to make amends while on this rock, and each chance we have to forgive or ask for forgiveness should be taken with fervor.

Leave it to a funeral to give me a desire to learn more about my God, to develop a closer relationship with Him. Though we will not fully know Him until this life passes, I want to uncover as much as I can about my God. When I get to heaven, I want to be able to reminisce with God about the times we had on earth, about the times we shared together, about the times when we laughed and the times we cried.

Leave it to a funeral to make me realize that death is not the end, but is somehow the beginning. I love how Philip Yancy, in his book Where Is God When It Hurts?, compares human death to the birth of an infant. Caught up and comfortable in our current surroundings, we are suddenly released into a whole new and better place. For the baby, it is going from the mother’s uterus to the world. For the dying Christian, it is going from the world to a completely new and unfathomable existence. For both, there is a moment of discomfort and fear, but neither would ever return to their previous state of being.

Leave it to a funeral to remind me how little we know about death and how much we want to avoid the subject. The sensation of death is only known to those whose soul has already left this earth leaving us, the living, wondering, waiting. Death is hardly the conversation topic of choice. Because we do not know, because we have not experienced it, the subject creates uneasiness. Especially among those who do not have hope for the afterlife, death, the end, is a matter to avoid. I do not envy their position.

Leave it to a funeral to make me want to cherish every moment that I have, that God has given me. As I have gotten older, time has seemed to take on a newer, faster pace. When I was young, the days were slow, Christmas seemed to never come. Now, I go to sleep in January and somehow wake up in June, uncertain of where the time has hidden itself. As hours, days, weeks, months, years get shorter, I am reminded to grab hold of each moment and savor each instant. We need to slow down our warp speed lives and relax a little, enjoy a little.

Leave it to a funeral to make me once again understand the beauty of salvation. Though we will not always be here on this planet, we will always live. There will be life after this short trip, and because of what Christ did with His time on earth, we are able to spend a beautiful eternity in His presence. We can live beyond the grave.

Leave it to a funeral to show me the importance of living out Jesus’ words to “Go and make disciples of all the nations …” (Matthew 28:19). We have a responsibility to those around us. We are in charge of presenting the amazing story of Jesus both physically and verbally to our communities. Our hearts need to be urgent. We can be the difference makers. We have to be the difference makers.

    Jeopardy!

I have always been a huge Jeopardy! fan and often pretend I am competing on the show while watching. Wednesday night (1/19/11), I would have been the Jeopardy! champion...hands down!

The final Jeopardy! category went as follows:

    Ocean Life
The deepest-diving sea turtle is this one whose name suggests the flexibility that lets it survive 1,700 lbs./square inch pressure

    (cue theme song music)

What is Leatherback/Dermochelys Coriacea/Leandro the Great Jellyfish Slayer?

    YAY!

Oh, to have been there on the Fifth Day...

I just spent the past eighty-four minutes immersed in the Disneynature documentary Oceans. Wow; I am left completely breathless at the majesty of creation. For the first time since October, all the worry and stress and frustration of this new transition subsided. I was humbled of how little I know and just how big and brimming the ocean is. I had forgotten how little and meaningless I am especially when seeking my own will compared to the vast richness of stilling myself before the One who holds all of this in the palm of His almighty hands. I am thankful that, without fail, the ocean always directly and instantly points me back to my first love.

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
And marked off the heavens by the span,
And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
    Isaiah 40:12

    New Year, New Focus

January 15th: The date when I finally realize a new year has begun. Mainly because thirty-one days from now is my own "new year" celebration. A dear friend of mine in preparation of a weeklong visit informed her roommates that I was big on turtles, hugs, pictures, and birthdays. Pretty accurate, eh? :-] Here are a few of my hopes and goals (in no particular order) for my twenty-sixth year of life:
    • Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
    • Walk across the Golden Gate Bridge
    • Read through the Old Testament
    • Play more Trumpet and Scrabble
    • Memorize twelve passages of Scripture
    • Become Life Guard certified
    • Blog at least once a month
    • Write a letter at least once a month
    • Witness a "boil" (sea turtles hatching from their nest)
    • Continue to reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle
